In his numerous portraits of girls and boys of all ages, france has described the physical problems associated with adolescence, ill-health and unatractiveness. The portraits of boys convey their intellectual attributes, those of girls the emotional. France sees in the childhood or adolescence of girls the women they will become. He has painted very few negative portraits. His portrayal of boys is more varied and more profound than that of girls. France places his children and adolescents in a variety of environments where they gain a range of experiences. They make little impact on their environment, which is what forms then and determines the adult which they become. According to his intentions, france gives roles of varying importance to the children in his narratives. The narrator may or may not be the grown up version of the child portrayed. France's preference lied clearly with his sensitive and imaginative young characters. No real development is visible in france's portrayal of childhood and adolescence. The most one can see is a move from a serene acceptance to a deep disenchantmant with life.

A travers ses nombreux portraits de filles et de garcons de tous ages, france a bien cerne les problemes physiques lies a l'adolescence, a la maladie, a la laideur. Les portraits de garcons sont plus intellectuels, ceux des filles plus sensuels. France voit dans l'enfance ou l'adolescence des filles une sorte de virutalite. Il a cree tres peu de portraits negatifs de filles. Les portraits moraux de garcons sont plus varies et plus approfondis que pour les filles. France place ses enfants et ses adolescents dans des milieux varies, ou ils accumulent des experiences. Ils agissent peu sur leur milieu, qui les forme et determine l'adulte qu'ils seront. France attribue des roles d'importance variable a ses personnages enfantins dans la narration, selon ses buts et ses intentions. Le narrateur est ou non le personnage enfant vieilli. La preference de france va visiblement vers ses petits personnages sensibles et imaginatifs. On ne peut pas observer de veritable evolution dans l'image de l'enfance et de l'adolescence chez france. Tout au plus peut-on constater qu'il passe progressivement d'un humour souriant a un grand desenchantement devant la vie.
