De la répétition dans les textes littéraires : situation historique et approche structurale

This thesis is a theoretical inquiry into the problem of repetition in literary texts. The introductory historical survey of repetition as presented in treatises and handbooks of rhectoric, grammar and stylistics sincethe 17c is followed by an analysis of the formal status and stylistic resources of the rhetorical figures connected with that linguistic trait. The main body of the thesis is devoted to a structural investigation of repetition, the object in view being to identify its constituent features, to describe the rhetorical procedures accruing from it and lastly to show mode of functioning, without losing sight of the relationship that necessarily binds historically situated texts with their secondary, contingent poetics. The texts discussed belong to different periods ( 17c to 20c) and to different genres ( poetic narractives, novels, private diaries, poems). They have benn selected for their representative value, the principale of selection being that they should respond to structural analysis by revealing significant patterns of the use of repetition. The overarching purpose of this inquiry will have been to show that repetition is neither habitus nor memory, but a category of becoming.

Il s'agit d'une recherche en theorie litteraire concernant le probleme de la repetition dans les textes litteraires. Apres avoir dresse, en introduction, la situation historique du fait de repetition dans les traites et manuels de rhetorique ainsi que dans les grammaires et ouvrages de stylistique, depuis le 17 eme siecle, il a ete fait une analyse du statut formel et des enjeux des fiqures de rhetorique attachees a ce fait de langue. La these est neanmoins consacree pour l'essentiel a l'investigation structurale du fait de repetition, l'objectif etant sur la base des transformations, d'identifier les constituants immanents de la repetition, de decrire les procedures mises en oeuvre et d'en montrer, en final, le fonctionnement, tout en situant le rapport formel oblige d'une situation historique des textes avec une poetique contingente et seconde. L'analyse porte sur quatre textes appartenant a des epoques ( du dix-septieme au vingtieme siecle ) et a des genres differents ( recit poetique, roman, journal intime, poesie ). La condition d'admission des textes dans le corpus a ete qu'en reponse a une demarche structurale, ils puissent offrir une modelisation du fait de repetition. Ainsi l'enjeu de cette recherche a-t-il ete de montrer que, ni habitus, ni memoire, la repetition est une categorie du devenir.
