This work is a comparative study of a limited number of aspects of verb determination in English and basaa. English is well known. As for basaa, it is a language of southern Cameroon. This thesis comprises three parts which respectively deals with the problems of "tense", "aspect" and "modality". In each part the first chapter examines the most prominent theories on the relevant topic before propounding a method of analyzing data, our global analytical approach is inspired by one basic idea: that of the speaker's endorsement of his discourse. In the first part, we theoritically try to show the necessity of dissociating (in linguistic inquiry) the concept of "tense" from that of "time". In the second part we define the category of aspect relatively to that of modality. Compare with the traditional standpoint, this results in a certain limitation of the importance of the concept of aspect as far as the epistemology of the verb is concerned. Ce travail étudie de façon contrastive un nombre limité d'aspects de la détermination verbale en anglais et basaa. L'anglais n'est plus à présenter. Quant à lui, le basaa est un idiome du sud-Cameroun. Cette thèse est construite en trois parties qui s'intéressent respectivement aux problèmes de "temps", d'"aspect" et de "modalisation". Dans chacune des trois parties, le premier chapitre interroge les théories les plus en vue de la problématique en question, avant d'avancer des propositions d'analyse des faits concernes. Ces propositions procèdent toutes d'une idée centrale : celle de la prise en charge par l'énonciateur de son discours. Dans la première partie, la réflexion théorique nous amène à préférer le concept de "visée" à celui de "temps". Dans la deuxième partie, nous définissons la catégorie de l'aspect relativement à celle de la modalisation. Par rapport à la position classique, il en résulte une certaine limitation de la portée du concept d'aspect dans l'épistémologie du verbe.
