"venice is the place where my whole life was decided" barres wrote in his introduction to his trilogy le culte du moi in 1892. As a matter of fact venice represents the founding place of his experience as a writer. Being first a city of triumphant individualism, of proud reclusion and edification of the self, venice gradually becomes the city of miasma, of the rotting away and of morbid voluptuousness. This evolution of the re-creation of venice, which appears as a consequence of the newly-discovered awareness of the author's lorrainese roots, enables us to understand the profound change in his work as well as its coherence. Being a mixture of fascination and repugnance, also of desire and rejection, the relationship barres builds up with venice looks very much like the one he develops with the writing process. This thesis studies the various representations of venice in barres'works - the egotistic venice in un homme libre (1889), the novelistic venice in l'ennemi des lois (1892) and l'appel au soldat (1900), the poetical venice in amori et dolori sacrum (1903) - and it also shows how each one of them provides a reflexion on the writing process itself in all its bearings.

"c'est a venise que j'ai decide toute ma vie" ecrit barres en prefacant sa trilogie du culte du moi, en 1892. Venise represente en effet le lieu fondateur de son experience d'ecrivain. D'abord ville de l'individualisme triomphant, de la reclusion orgueilleuse et de l'edification de soi, venise devient progressivement la ville des miasmes, du pourrissement et de la volupte morbide. Cette metamorphose de la figure de la ville, corollaire de l'enracinement lorrain de barres, permet de rendre compte de l'evolution profonde de l'oeuvre mais en meme temps de sa coherence. Melange de fascination et de repulsion, de desir et de rejet, le rapport de barres a venise ressemble a celui qu'il entretient avec l'ecriture. La these etudie les diverses figurations de venise dans l'oeuvre - venise egotiste d'un homme libre (1889), venise romanesque de l'ennemi des lois (1892) et de l'appel au soldat (1900), venise poetique d'amori et dolori sacrum (1903) - et montre comment chacune propose une reflexion sur l'acte meme d'ecrire, ses procedures et ses enjeux.
