In the saga of Josephin Péladan, which is intitulated the Latine Decadence, the magus Mérodack is the central character. Incarnation of the author, he regroups around him others characters, auxiliary magus, multiple facets of himself. This character Mérodack is, in the works of Joséphin Péladan, the revealer-developer of a decadent world, and, at the same time the being who wants offer a model, an attitude to take up: the magic, which is the science of the ancient magus, and an intellectual style to dominate the world by the literary creation. At a period where nobody believes the magic, the character of the magus is the most beautiful image of the writer.

Dans le cycle romanesque de Péladan intitulé la décadence latine, le mage Mérodack est le personnage central. Incarnation de l'auteur, il regroupe autour de lui d'autres héros romanesques, sortes de mages auxiliaires, multiples facettes de lui-même. Ce personnage est, chez Péladan, le révélateur d'un monde en décadence et en même temps l'être qui veut offrir à ce monde un modèle, une attitude à adopter : la magie, qui, autant que la science des anciens mages, est une façon intellectuelle de dominer le monde par la création littéraire. A une époque où l'on ne croit plus à la magie, la figure du mage est la plus belle métaphore de l'écrivain.
