Han Ryner is a french writer who, between 1880 and 1938 published about fifty books of various genres (novels, tales, essays, plays, poetry). At the age of 51, in 1912, he was proclamed prince of the story tellers, on j. -h. Rosny aine's initiative and by the readers of l'intransigeant, the famous parisian newspaper. Even though individualism and csocial thought are commonly regarded as highly antinomic, this thesis attempts to shows through many references to the works and militant actions of h. Ryner, that the social thinking of that individualist, both an author and a manysided intellectual, lead him, in those days, to commitments not devoid of interests for his contemporary citizens. For the knew how to empound what he called a harmonic individualism distinguishing it from the "selfish" or "dominating" individualism which he rejected in the name of his code of ethics and humanism. That's why, even though he was regarded as a mystic layman, Han Ryner was a philosopher in the ancient meaning of the workd ; that is to say a "sage" expressing himself in a language, somewhat old-fashioned at times, but aften refined and remarklably delicate. Therefore, our post-modern society, doomed to chaos and confusion could no doubt, profit from the contact with this open and pluralistic philosophy.

Han Ryner est un auteur français qui publia, des années 1880 a 1938, une cinquantaine de livres dans des genres fort divers (romans, contes, essais, théâtre, poésie). Il fut élu en 1912, à 51 ans, prince des conteurs sous l'impulsion de J. -H. Rosny ainé et par les lecteurs de L'Intransigeant, journal de Paris. Alors que communément, individualisme et pensée sociale semblent antinomiques au plus haut point, cette thèse tente de montrer en se référant à l'œuvre et à l'action militante de Han Ryner que la pensée sociale de cet individualiste, à la fois auteur et penseurs aux multiples facettes, a conduit ce dernier, à son époque, à des engagements non dépourvus d'intérêts pour le citoyen contemporain lui-même. Il a, en effet, su exposer ce qu'il appela un individualisme "harmonique" en le distinguant des individualismes "égoïstes" ou "doministes" qu'il rejetait au nom de son éthique et de son humanisme. Ce qui fait que Han Ryner, même compris en tant que "mystique laïque" fut un philosophe au sens ancien du terme, c'est-à-dire un sage s'exprimant dans une langue, peut-être parfois un peu désuète, mais le plus souvent raffinée et d'une rare délicatesse. Aussi notre société postmoderne, vouée au chaos et au désordre, pourrait assurément tirer les plus grands profits au contact de cette pensée ouverte et pluraliste.
