Stendhal et la "chimere absente" : essai sur la melancolie

The starting-point of this work - developed around the central image of the absent chimera - has led to two different axis of reflexion. The first of these axis concerns the situation and the role played by the notion of melancholy in stendhal's works, band on a few chosen examples such as de l'amour, armance and la chartreuse de parme. The other axis will focus on the birth of an aesthetics of melancholy, the way it rises and evolves throughout the works, its apex and its vanishing points elements borrowed from the history of ideas as well from the history of medecine of the begin, ning of the 19 th century will serve to ground this enquiry.

Autour de l'image centrale de la << chimere absente >> qui a ete le point de depart, une reflexion sera menee dans deux directions : la place, le role de la notion de << melancolie >> dans l'oeuvre de stendhal, prenant appui sur quelques exemples pri♭ vilegies comme de l'amour, armance ou la chartreuse de parme d'une part. D'autre part, la naissance d'une esthetique melancolique, son parcours et son evo♭ lution dans l'uvre, ses temps forts comme ses lignes de fuite. Des elements empruntes aussi bien a l'histoire des idees qu'a l'histoire medicale au debut du xixe siecle serviront de support a une exploration qui ne s'appuie sur aucune theo♭ rie en particulier mais tente de proposer une synthese sur une notion aussi complexe et multiforme que la << melancolie >> stendhalienne.
