From almost the beginnings of semiology, still images are considered meaningful objects. With the theory of semiotics and its methodology of critical analysis, images have acquired the status of a textual organisation with a meaningful structure which owes nothing to chance nor is the result of free interpretations. Within this framework, we have taken into consideration findings from various authors working on images in order to build a device which allows us to recover, through hypothetical-deductive reasoning, the minimal meaning every image possesses. Through each one of the three examples of analysis, the idea is to elaborate quite a precise description of the level of expression in order to facilitate the elaboration of the meaning which appears on the level of content through our semiotic approach. This work tries to enhance the fact that there exists a primary signification in every still image (likely to be found by all individuals pertaining to the same society), and that this interpretation process occurs when the two levels are brought together. This approach defines signification as a hierarchical construction resulting from a slow maturation of the meaning where the reader starts from his sensations to reach a coherent and relevant interpretation in relation to the discourse which the image implies.

Depuis quasiment les debuts de la semiologie, l'image fixe est concue comme un objet qui a du sens. Avec la theorie semiotique et sa methodologie d'analyse critique, l'image a acquis le statut d'organisation textuelle qui possede une structure significative qui n'est ni due au hasard, ni le resultat d'interpretations libres. Dans ce cadre, nous avons pris en consideration les apports de divers auteurs travaillant sur l'image pour essayer de construire un outil qui permette par un raisonnement hypothetico-deductif de retrouver la signification minimale que toute image possede. A travers chacun des trois exemples d'analyses, il s'agit d'elaborer une description relativement detaillee du plan de l'expression pour favoriser l'elaboration de la signification qui emerge par l'approche semiotique du plan du contenu. Ce travail essaye de mettre en evidence le fait qu'il existe une signification primaire dans chaque image fixe (susceptible d'etre retrouver par tous les individus d'une meme societe), et que ce processus interpretatif s'effectue par la reunion des deux plans de ce langage. Cette demarche pose la signification comme une construction hierarchique, resultat d'une lente maturation du sens ou le lecteur part de ses sensations pour aboutir a une interpretation coherente et pertinente en fonction du discours tenu par l'image.
