Occuring as it did between victor' hugo's election to the academie francaise (1841) and his admission to the peerage (1845), le rhin is more than a travel book. It presente the problem of power and of the poet's political role. How well- founded his political ambition is, that is what the press hurries to judge, as shown by the reception of the addresses at the academie as well as of the work. The study of the social and political context affords understanding of the nature of hugo's purpose, i. E. To demonstrate that literature is a power. The style of writing used by hugo to carry such a purpose is based on characteristics of the genre he selected. As well as on writing devices applied to the landscape and history. The setting of the travel book is then larger than that of the travel; it is in fact the world, which hugo describes better to set the utopia of a great european federation against a reality characterized by geopolitical partitioning. Le rhin suggests the mission of the post, as a guide of the peoples and a peaceful civilizer wielding symbolic power. Hugo presents himself as the necessary medium.

Inscrit entre l'election a l'academie francaise de victor hugo (1841) et sa nomination a la pairie (1845), le rhin (1842-1845) n'est pas un simple recit de voyage. Il ressortit a une problematique axee sur le pouvoir et la fonction du poete dans la cite. D'emblee, c'est la legitimite de son ambition politique qui est jugee par la presse ainsi que le montrent la reception des discours academiques et celle de l'oeuvre. L'etude du contexte socio-politique permet de definir la nature du projet hugolien : demontrer que "la litterature est une puissance". Une poetique est ainsi mise en oeuvre qui se revele aussi bien dans la rhetorique du genre choisi que dans les strategies discursives ayant pour objet le paysage et l'histoire. Le veritable espace du recit de voyage n'est donc pas l'espace delimite par le voyage reel mais le monde dont il decrit la prose pour mieux ancrer l'utopie d'une grande federation europeenne face au morcellement de la realite geopolitique. Le rhin indique le sens de la mission du poete : guider les peuples et faire oeuvre de civilisation sereine en agissant par le pouvoir symbolique qu'il detient. Hugo se presente comme le medium indispensable pour eviter les conflitsd politiques et sociaux.
