This research is concerned with the way the concept of love is conceived in the works of andre gide et romain rolland at the beginning of the 20th century. Whether in la porte etroite and la symphonic pastorale or in jean-christophe, the two authors express particular views about love and emotions. People who are deeply in love cannot reunite and fulfill their passionate yearnings either because of moral or social impediments, or because of self-imposed constraints. Happiness is never at the conclusion of these three love stories, although the way for it seems to be paved at their outsets. In the end there is nothing but death and the loss of the loved woman who, by her evasion from any imminent delectation, gives no chance for love.

Le travail de recherche porte sur la facon particuliere d'andre gide et de romain rolland de concevoir l'amour en ce debut de xxe siecle. En effet, que ce soit dans la porte etroite et dans la symphonic pastorale ou que que ce soit dans jean-christophe, les deux ecrivains ont une vision personnelle de l'amour et des sentiments. Interdits moraux et sociaux ou empechements d'ordre personnel ne permettent pas a l'amour de se realiser - volontairement ou involontairement - par l'union des etres qui s'aiment pourtant d'un amour infini. Le bonheur n'est jamais au rendez-vous de ces trois histoires d'amour dont rien, au depart, n'entrave la pleine realisation. Il n'y a, en definitive, que la mort et la perte de la femme aimee qui, par sa volonte de fuir un bonheur a sa portee, ne donne aucune chance a l'amour.
