Louis Destouches took as a pseudonym his maternal grandmother's first name Céline, which was also his own mother's third name. In a work that is frequently autobiographical, this choice is significant and revealing. Playing a leading role or in the background, the narrator's mother is ever present; sometimes as good fairy, sometimes as which, intrusive or distant, pathetic or sublime. She is essentially dynamic, and the writer's relationship to her is never set. When he's not talking about his own mother, the writer is concerned with the concept of motherhood and the meaning of maternal. In various ways she affects the thoughts, inspiration and style of Céline’s writings. The thesis is described as: the relationship between mother and son, a male writer and his mother and the influences of this maternal heritage (the inability to enjoy life, fixed moral values, nostalgia for the past) which even extends as far as opinions on specific medical practice and mother tongue in his writing.

Louis Destouches a pris pour pseudonyme « Céline », le prénom de sa grand-mère maternelle, troisième prénom aussi de sa mère. Ce choix est important et révélateur dans une œuvre souvent autobiographique. En filigrane ou dans un premier rôle, suggérée, évoquée, la mère du narrateur, tantôt sorcière, tantôt bonne fée, envahissante ou inaccessible, pathétique ou sublime, déambule tout au long de l'œuvre. Essentiellement dynamique, la relation de l'écrivain à la figure maternelle n'est jamais figée - quand il ne s'agit pas de sa propre mère, il s'agit toujours de maternel et de « maternalité » ; elle parcourt à des degrés divers la pensée, le souffle et l'écriture de Céline. L'étude se conduit ainsi : la relation entre la mère et le fils, entre la mère et l'écrivain fils, des influences de l'héritage maternel (l'incapacité à jouir de la vie, certaines valeurs morales, une nostalgie du passé) jusqu'aux rivages de la mère que constituent l'exercice de la médecine et le rapport à la langue maternelle dans l'écriture.
