The intention of this thesis is to bring to the fore the predominant themes of secrets and defeat in reverdy's poetry, both of which figure in his name. In his collection of poems plupart du temps, i examined the way in which the presence of a + secret ; is indicated and implicitely revealed : the dissemination of the signifiers +verre;, + vert;, + tournant ; (from the latin + revertere ;), which are present in the poet's name, along with his frequent use of homophonies and polysemies maintain the ambiguity but also reveal the secret of his origins. These poems which cover up wounds caused by his origins are followed by other works (main d'oeuvre, flaques de verre), which question reality in the hopes of penetrating the mysteries of death, god, and the + otherside ;. In his search for the absolute, the poet, batting with contradictory aspirations (the antagonisme of the images of the heart and the soul, of high and low), comes up again his own limits. The main one being the bind of love, which he trys to hide, but it is made obvious by the polysemy of the vocabulary he uses relating to sewing. His personnal defeat is food for his poetry, a song of an agonizing struggle without begenning or end. This poetry of defeat also finds its source in the limits inherent to language. I also asked myself, considering the fascination reverdy had for the cubists and his regret of never having been a painter, to what extent painting would have enabled him to succeed there where he considered himself to have failed.

Cette these se propose de mettre en evidence la predominance dans la poesie reverdienne des thematiques du secret et de l'echec, toutes deux deja inscrites et reunies dans le nom meme du poete. Nous avons etudie dans les recueils de plupart du temps comment le secret est designe (analyse des marques de la dissimulation) et implicitement revele. La dissemination des signifiants verre, vert, revers, tournant (du latin revertere) presents dans le nom du poete, ainsi que les nombreux jeux d'homophonie et de polysemie qui entretiennent l'ambiguite du discours, devoilent le secret des origines. Aux poemes scelles sur une blessure originelle succedent des recueils (main d'oeuvre, flaques de verre) qui questionnent le reel dans l'espoir de percer le mystere de la mort, de dieu, de + l'autre cote ;. Dans cette quete d'absolu le poete, aux prises avec des aspirations contradictoires (antagonisme des images du coeur et de l'esprit, du haut et du bas) se heurte a ses propres limites : la principale, le lien amoureux, placee sous le sceau du secret, est rendue manifeste par la polysemie du vocabulaire relatif a la couture. L'echec de l'homme, nourrit cette poesie, chant de l'ecartelement sans debut et sans fin. Cette poesie de l'echec prend egalement sa source dans les limites inherentes au langage. Nous nous sommes demandee, vu la fascination de reverdy pour les peintres cubistes et son regret de ne pas avoir ete peintre, dans quelle mesure la peinture lui aurait permis de reussir la ou il considerera avoir echoue.
