Abstract EN:

Reported speech (and more specifically direct and indirect speech, since we have not treated free indirect speech here) is seen from a referential point of view : to quote or report a speech is to refer to it, and more precisely to refer to its signs, or to its content, or to its form. The reference to signs is a metalinguistic operation, which means that it is only possible through the metalanguage structures : as such, reported speech is considered metalinguistic. An utterance that reports a speech is an utterance where the quoting part is encoded either to signify full determined signs, or their meaning, or their expression, so that one can refer to each of them and submit them as being part of a speech. Thus, what we call a reported speech is signified and denoted by another speech. A speech is taken for a concrete and actualized linguistic production. Reported speech can then be defined as a type of metalinguistic discourse which allows us to speak of actualized linguistic sequences, that is to speak of all linguistic sequence considered in actual use (vs language). This research belongs to the metalanguage theory as j. Rey-debove worked it out.

Abstract FR:

Rey-debove.
