The main objective of this dissertation is to analyse the look as a sign of the outlook in the XIXth century French novel. Belonging to more different fields (art, philosophy, psychology, sociology, medicine, literature), the look asks for a special treatment, as it cannot be approached only using the classic literary methods (i. E. The thematic one, the poetic one or the linguistic one), but also taking into account information provided by fields such as psychology or the study of the outlooks. This dissertation points out those characteristics of the look which can be found in all the novels, in spite of their belonging to different literary movements such as romanticism, realism, and naturalism: space, time, characters, limits, contents, form, message, functions and effects. Analysing these characteristics leads us to the conclusion that the look is a unitary phenomenon governed by a precise set of rules established according to the time's usages.

Cette thèse a pour objectif d'analyser le regard comme signe de la mentalité dans le roman français du XIXème siècle. Se rattachant à plusieurs domaines de recherche (art, philosophie, psychologie, sociologie, médecine, littérature), le regard demande une attention particulière car il ne peut être approché qu'en combinant les méthodes strictement littéraires (la critique thématique, la poétique ou la linguistique) avec les informations offertes par la psychologie, par l'histoire des mentalités ou par d'autres disciplines. C'est ainsi que cette étude parvient à dégager certaines caractéristiques du regard qui restent constantes malgré la diversité du corpus employé (constitué à partir des romans réalistes, romantiques et naturalistes): espace, temps, acteurs, limites, contenu, forme, message, fonctions et effets. L'examen de ces constantes permet de considérer le regard comme un phénomène unitaire, régi par un code précis de règles conformes aux usages de l'époque.
