We have tried to identify and to analyze precisely the notion of "writer", as it is created in the roman texts, and as it represents itself, before to get formalized and theorized. The object of our study is a "long" XIIIth century, because the greatest part of the literature at this time is just a big laboratory, where the notion of "writer" becomes more and more precise and efficient. We have found that the problems which are linked to the concept of writer are in a strong relation with the problems of the development of novel as a literary type. As soon as a text is mostly a mirror of its own creation, so that the image of the writer appears in it as a personification of the abstract notion of writing, this text uses the narrative schema for expressing its preoccupations. In almost every kind of poetry of allegorical dreams and visions, of polemic or historical texts, there is a part of narrative: it may be discreet, and difficult to perceive, or on the contrary it may be nearly universal, so that the reader sees nothing but it. However, the greatest development of the figures of "writer" takes place in the novels, and peculiarly in the big prose novels.

Nous nous efforçons de repérer et d'analyser la notion même d'écrivain telle qu'elle se crée dans les textes en langue vulgaire, et telle qu'elle se représente, avant de se formaliser et de se théoriser. Notre étude est centrée sur un long XIIIe siècle, car l'essentiel de la littérature de cette époque nous semble avoir fonctionné comme un vaste laboratoire où la notion d'écrivain s'est affinée jusqu'à être opérationnelle. Les problèmes liés à la figure de l'écrivain se sont avérés en relation étroite avec ceux que pose l'expansion du roman comme forme littéraire. En effet, là où une œuvre tend à être avant toute autre chose un miroir de sa propre création, et où par conséquent la figure de l'écrivain s'y dessine comme une personnification de la notion abstraite d'écriture, inévitablement elle a recours pour formaliser ces préoccupations au schéma narratif: dans la trame de la poésie, dans celle des songes et visions allégoriques, des "textes engagés", des chroniques historiques, court un fil romanesque, parfois discret et à peine repérable, parfois si envahissant qu'on ne voit plus que lui. Mais le plein essor des figures d'écrivain s'opère dans les textes proprement romanesques, et en particulier dans les grands romans cycliques en prose.
