After a brief introduction to machine translation, with a few definitions relating to this domain, the author studies the treatment of time and aspect in some of the existing m. T. Systems. A whole section is devoted to the european pr0ject "eurotra", with a critical approach. The main partof the thesis consists of a thorough examination of the translations of the french "present" tense into english : 1) what are the various possible translations (study of a corpus)? 2) what has to be taken into account in order to infer the value of the present and hence translate it (referential interpretation, status of the process, noun determination, lexical aspect), 3) what are the rules that can be drawn for the automatic translation of these verbal forms?

Apres une breve introduction a la traduction automatique et quelques definitions relatives a ce domaine, l'auteur etudie plus particulierementles problemes du traitement du temps et de l'aspect dans certains systemes de t. A. Existants. Un chapitre entier, d'approche critique, est consacre au projet europeen eurotra. La partie principale de la these consiste en un examen attentif des traductions du present francais francais en anglais : 1) quelles sont les possibilites de traduction du present (etude de corpus)? 2) que faut-il prendre en compte pour deduire la valeur du present et donc le traduire (interpretation referentielle, statut du proces, determination nominale, aspect lexical), 3) quelles regles peut-on etablir pour la traduction automatique des formes verbales au present?
