One may read Jean Santeuil as the rough draft of a bildungroman, but also as an autobiographical novel and, above all, as a poetic novel. One may speak of a bildungroman, because the hero is followed through the steps of his formation, which is, at the same time, sentimental, wordly and esthetic. Then we offer an autobiographical reading of Jean Santeuil. It is less an autobiographical narrative than a novel of autobiographical inspiration. Indeed, the author cloaks himself by distanciation and "mise an abyme", but the autobiographical evidences are very many. Proust looks for some effects, with the moralist's voice, newspaperlike writing and novellistic theatricalization. The poetic novel brings out Proust's originality. One may read Jean Santeuil as a vast poem in prose or as a set of short poems in prose. The poetry is linked to the unfinishedness of the text, to a conception of the world which set apart poetic life and prosaic life. The poetic prose of jean santeuil is characterized by its length, complexity, recurrences and symetric effects. It is built upon a poetry of the elements, the richness of the images and symbols and upon the poetry of the name. This unfinished bildungroman is an original and authentic work.

On peut lire Jean Santeuil comme une ébauche de roman d'apprentissage, mais aussi comme un roman autobiographique et surtout comme un roman poétique. On peut parler de roman d'apprentissage, car le héros est suivi à travers les étapes de sa formation placée sous le signe de l'éducation sentimentale, mondaine et esthétique. Dans un second temps, nous proposons une lecture autobiographique de Jean Santeuil. Il s'agit moins d'un récit autobiographique que d'un roman d'inspiration autobiographique. En effet, l'auteur s'avance masque grâce aux procédés de distanciation et de mises en abyme, mais les traces autobiographiques sont très nombreuses. Proust recherche certains effets, avec la voix du moraliste, l'écriture journalistique et la théâtralisation romanesque. C'est le roman poétique qui révèle l'originalité de Proust. On peut lire Jean Santeuil comme un vaste poème en prose ou comme une collection de petits poèmes en prose. La poésie est liée a l'inachèvement du texte, a une vision du monde qui oppose vie prosaique et vie poetique. La prose poétique de Jean Santeuil est caractérisée par la longueur, la complexité, des récurrences et des effets de symétrie. Elle est fondée sur une poésie des éléments, sur la richesse des images et des symboles et sur la poésie du nom. Ce roman de jeunesse inachevé constitue une œuvre authentique et originale.
