Chateaubriand is one of the creators of the literary travel, but he has also been under the influence of his predecessors. His writing cannot be analyzed without their being related to the traditional genre and culture out of which they have grown. The author also interweaves relations between his travel narratives and his other works. As soon as he is to depict the elsewhere, particular processes appear in the making of the text. They build up a time and space within the story - which is never itself the direct reflection of experience. Lastly the traveler is inevitably featured within his text, whether as narrator or as a character, but also through the visions of the world which he presents his reader with. By rewriting the world and the ego and by inventing the character of the travelling writer, chateaubriand has brought travel narrative up to the level of the major branches of literary creation.

Chateaubriand est l'un des créateurs du voyage littéraire, mais il subit l'influence de ses prédécesseurs. Son écriture ne peut être analysée sans qu'il soit fait référence à la tradition générique et culturelle dans laquelle elle s'inscrit, et l'auteur tisse également des liens entre ses voyages et ses autres œuvres. Dès lors qu'il s'agit de représenter l'ailleurs, apparaissent certaines procédures de mise en texte. Celles-ci construisent une temporalité et un espace internes à la relation, qui n'est jamais le reflet direct de l'expérience. Enfin, le voyageur prend inévitablement place dans son texte, comme narrateur ou comme personnage, mais aussi par le biais des visions du monde qu'il propose au lecteur. En réécrivant le monde et le moi, et en inventant la figure de l'écrivain voyageur, Chateaubriand place le voyage à l'égal des branches majeures de la création littéraire.
