Les Chroniques du dernier instant, a doctoral thesis at the Université François Rabelais at Tours, tries to define the literary personality of the poet Marcel Lecomte, who was born in Brussels in 1900. Three levels of reading emerge from this essay. First of all, there are the study of and the comments on the texts proper by Lecomte, which are simultaneously set against the collected biographical data. At the bottom of the pages, hundreds of footnotes represent a second level, which allows for the study of the historical context of belgian literature in french experienced by Lecomte. These notes also result from the emphasis on intertextuality underlying the whole study. A last level emanates from the clash between the main body of the text and the complete and updated bibliography of Lecomte's works. The first part of this essay tries to work out the clues provided by Lecomte's childhood, his adolescence and his poetic beginnings to elucidate the paradoxes marking his poetical career, viz, if literature is what Lecomte was not looking for, if he had sensed from the start that it was not a question of creating a work, why did he write? The second part attempts to formulate an answer to the same question through two alternative approaches: "how did he write?" and "what-or who, in view of his numerous chronicles-are his works about?"

Les Chroniques du dernier instant, titre d'une thèse de doctorat soutenue à l'université François Rabelais de Tours, essaient de cerner la personnalité littéraire du poète Marcel Lecomte, né à Bruxelles en 1900. Trois niveaux de lecture peuvent être dégagés dans cette étude. Il y a d'abord l'étude et le commentaire des textes de Lecomte pour eux-mêmes, mais aussi par rapport aux données biographiques recueillies. En bas des pages, des centaines de notes constituent un second niveau qui permet l'étude du contexte historique des lettres belges de langue française que Lecomte a traversé. Il est aussi, à l'origine de ces notes, le souci marqué de l'intertextualité qu'on a fait jouer de façon systématique, tout au long de l'étude. Un dernier niveau surgit, quant à lui, de la confrontation du corps du texte avec la bibliographie complète jusqu'à ce jour des écrits de Lecomte.
