Conversion, metaphor and metonymy represent the major semantic mechanisms of contemporary english "lexicogenesis". Conversion deals with the grammatical status of the "signified" and consists in transferring a lexis from a grammatical class to another (example: a mother derives into to mother). It implies miscellaneous syntactico-semantic relations between the base and the derived word. Metaphor and metonymy deal with the substance of the signified and roughly consist in naming an entity or a notion to signify another. Metaphor is based on a relationship of analogy between the two terms (example: a pig, for a dirty or greedy person) while metonymy is based on a relationship of logical association between the terms (example: the white house for the president). Both are part of our daily conversations and we usually use them unconsciously but they sometimes give more impetus, more dynamism to our language.

La conversion, la métaphore et la métonymie représentent les principaux processus de néologie sémantique de l'anglais contemporain. La conversion, qui concerne le statut grammatical du signifié, repose sur le transfert d'une lexie d'une classe à une autre (exemple: a mother a pour dérivé to mother) et implique une diversité de relations syntactico-semantiques entre la base et le dérivé. La métaphore et la métonymie concernent la substance du signifié et consistent schématiquement à designer une entité ou une notion pour signifier une autre. La première se fonde sur un rapport d'analogie (exemple: a pig pour signifier quelqu'un de sale ou de gourmand) et la seconde, sur un rapport d'association logique (exemple: the white house pour signifier le président). Ce sont des phénomènes très courants, qui font partie de nos expressions quotidiennes, que nous ne contrôlons pas toujours et qui parfois nous permettent de donner plus de vigueur à notre langage.
