The present thesis is a study of the esthetic of space in herodias of gustave flaubert. Flaubert succeeds in carrying into effect the space by means of contradiction and consistency which lead to see things in the juncture of the visible and the invisible. The space is not defined as a simple decoration, neither as a neutral residence, but as an important narrative element. He fully lives on his dispositions and transforms himself under the look of his characters who draw their textual force from their need to look and from their mouvements. Under one form or another, the space incorporates himself into the narrative game and leaves certain explicative elements in the dark. His work goes as far as balancing the divergent energies existing in the different narrative elements and determining the structure of the texte. Therefore, the space becomes the converging spot of the elements invested in the same writing mouvement. The analyses of the texte as well as the manuscript not only show the extensiveness of our anthor's work, but also permit us to share, once more, the intimacy of his dream on the book about nothing.

La presente these etudie l'esthetique de l'espace dans herodias de g. Flaubert. Flaubert parvient a une representation de l'espace par des moyens contradictoires et convergents qui font vivre les choses a la jointure du visible et de l'invisible. L'espace n'est pas concu comme un simple decor, ni comme un habitacle neutre, mais comme une instance narrative importante. Il vit pleinement de ses fibres et se metamorphose sous les regards des personnages qui puisent leur force textuelle a la fois dans leur besoin de voir et dans leurs deplacements. Sous une forme ou une autre, l'espace s'incorpore au narratif et met certains elements explicatifs dans l'ombre. Sa fonction va jusqu'a equilibrer les energies divergentes qui se forment entre les divers elements narratifs et a determiner la structure du texte. Aussi l'espace devientil le lieu de convergence de tous les elements investis dans le meme jeu de l'ecriture. Les analyses du texte ainsi que des manuscrits preparatoires non seulement montrent l'ampleur du travail de notre auteur, mais nous permettent egalement de partager, une fois de plus, l'intimite de son reve du livre sur le rien.
