THE FIRST PART OF THIS WORK TACKLES THE RELATION BETWEEN MAUPASSANT'S SPACE REPRESENTATION AND HIS ART OF NOVEL WICH CONSISTS TO GIVING "THE COMPLETE ILLUSION OF THE TRUE". MAUPASSANT COMBINES A REFERENTIAL REALITY AND THE ARTISTIC SUBJECTIVITY TO CREATE THE IMPRESSION OF VERISIMILITUDE IN HIS DESCRIPTIONS LIKE NORMANDY, NATURAL SPACES, PARIS OR CLOSED SPACES. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SPACE AND CHARACTERS, IN MAUPASSANT'S NOVELS, IS MARKED BY A PHENOMENON OF RECIPROCITY. SPACE IS SOMETIMES TRANSMITTER AND OTHER TIMES RECEIVER OF MODALITIES IN RELATION TO A SYSTEM OF CHARACTERS WICH CONTAINS CHARACTERS OF "BEING" AND CHARACTERS OF "DOING". THE SECOND PART OF THE WORK STUDIES THE MODALISATION OF CHARACTERS BY THE SPACE. THIS MODALISATION, WICH IS FOUNDED ON THE PERCEPTION'S THEME, CONFIRMS THE ACTIVE ROLE OF THE NOVEL'S SPACE AND HIS RECOUNTING FUNCTION IN THE STORY. THEN, WE DISCOVER, THROUGH PRIVILEGIED SPACES, THE IMPORTANCE OF SENSES IN THE NOVELIST'S WORK AND IT ESTABLISHS THE RELATIONSHIP OF strength BETWEEN PHYSICAL SPACE AND THE CHARACTER. THE THIRD PART OF THE THESIS IS CONSECRATED TO THE MODALISATION OF THE SPACE BY CHARACTER WHO IS APPOINTED TO THE CONSTRUCTION OF HIS OWN SPACE. THIS CONSTRUCTION IS ASSUMED BY CHARACTER'S LOOK AND IS SUBMISSIVED TO HIS VARIOUS SIGHTS. THE NOVEL'S SPACE, FOR MAUPASSANT, CAN ALSO BE SUBMISSIVED TO CHARACTER'S ACTION WHO, THROUGH "DOING"'S MODALITIES, ACTS ON THE FIGURATIVE SPACE OF NOVEL. WHEN HE BUILDS SPACE, WITH HIS ACTION OR WITH HIS LOOK, THE CHARACTER LAYS THERE HIS INDIVIDUAL MARKS. THESE MARKS HAVE A ROLE OF INFORMATION NEXT TO THE READER, THEY'ARE INDIRECT QUALIFICATIONS OF THE CHARACTER.

Abstract FR:

La premiere partie de ce travail aborde la relation qui existe entre la representation spatiale de maupassant et son esthetique romanesque laquelle consiste a donner "l'illusion complete du vrai". Ainsi, en combinant reel referentiel et subjectivite artistique, maupassant cree un effet de vraisemblance a travers ses descriptions et notamment celles de la normandie, des espaces agrestes, de paris ou des espaces clos. La relation espace-personnages, dans les romans de maupassant, se caracterise par un phenomene de reciprocite, l'espace etant tantot destinateur, tantot destinataire de modalites par rapport a un systeme de personnages qui se divise en deux categories: les personnages du "faire" et ceux de "l'etre". La seconde partie de la these etudie la modalisation du personnage par l'espace. Cette modalisation, principalement fondee sur le theme de la perception, met en valeur le role actantiel de l'espace romanesque et sa fonctionnalite narrative dans le recit. Nous decouvrons ainsi, a travers des espaces privilegies, la suprematie des sens qui regit l'oeuvre du romancier et qui etablit un rapport de force entre l'espace, physique en particulier et le personnage dans sa manifestation corporelle. La troisieme partie de la these est consacree a la modalisation de l'espace par le personnage qui est alors delegue a la construction de son propre cadre. Cette construction est notamment assumee par le regard du protagoniste et soumise a ses differents prismes. La composante spatiale, chez maupassant, peut etre aussi concue par l'action du protagoniste qui, a travers les modalites du "faire", intervient sur l'espace figuratif du roman. En construisant l'espace que ce soit par son action ou par son regard, le personnage y depose les marques de son individualite. Ces dernieres, sous forme de notations spatiales, remplissent une fonction informative aupres du lecteur car elles constituent les qualifications indirectes du personnage.
