Gracq's writing constantly refers to the plant life in order to describe the character. The latter seems also to be very attracted by the plant life, and he longs to join it. But this appeal meets with trouble : the resistance of self awareness. The character refuses to lose himself in the plant life. This resistance is finally overcomed by the poet, whose creating looks like the plant creating. That's why his name is the "human plant". The reverie allows him to become impregnated with the world, and the poet restores a magic world, which is a reminiscence and a new version of edenic garden. The adventure of the human plant is also Julien Gracq's adventure ; in the poetic garden of his writing, he uses the gardener's patient "alchemy", and preserves the plenitude of the plant.

L'écriture gracquienne se réfère sans cesse à l'être végétal pour décrire le personnage. Ce dernier semble aussi très attiré par l'être végétal, et aspire à le rejoindre. Cette aspiration rencontre toutefois un obstacle, qui est la résistance du moi refusant de se perdre en cet être végétal. Cette résistance est vaincue en définitive par le poète, dont le mode de création s'apparente à celui de la création végétale, d'où son nom de "plante humaine". En s'imprégnant des êtres et des choses par la rêverie, il restitue un "monde réenchanté", réminiscence et nouvelle version d'un jardin édénique. L'aventure de la plante humaine est aussi celle de Julien Gracq, qui, dans le jardin poétique de son écriture, s'adonne à l'"alchimie" patiente du jardinier et préserve la plénitude végétale.
