After revisiting the history of Swahili language in general (Part 1), the study analyses its evolution in Rwanda, Burundi and Zai͏̈re from its implantation up today (Part 2). In synchrony and from results of a sociolinguistic survey, it investigates language uses and attitudes with particular reference to Kiswahili (Part 3).

Après avoir revisité l'histoire du kiswahili en général (Partie 1), l'étude se penche sur son évolution au Rwanda, au Burundi et au Zai͏̈re dès son introduction juqu'à nos jours (Partie 2). Dans une perspective synchronique et partant des résultats d'enquête sociolinguistique, elle analyse les comportements et les attitudes linguistiques avec une attention particulière portée à la langue swahili (Partie 3)
