Two opposing themes run through histoire de ma vie : break-up and reconstruction. The marks of the former are many : the deaths of the younger brother and father, separation from the mother and place of birth, periods of confinement and emotional upheaval. But marks of the latter are also present : real and imaginary journeys, scattered with letters and novels. It is within this broken patchwork that the reader moves. This thesis comprises 6 chapters. The first and fifth attempt to trace the paternal roots of sand's spatial imaginary, of her dream of ubiquity. Certainly the role of the grandmother and the mother cannot be ignored, but it is the father who plays the most important role. Through the long account of maurice, sand's autobiography reveals the similarity between their experiences. Both were separated from their mothers at an early age, hence their attempts at reconciliation. They entertain the same ties with nohant and with paris, nohant as home and paris as their elswhere : love, liberty. Father and daughter are both passionate about travel. The second, third and fourth chapters deal with the rapport between paris and nohant, in which sand's desire to be both here and elsewhere at the same time continues to develop. These two places are both rival and complementary, linked more through writing than travel. This is what i have attempted to demonstrate in the final chapter : in sand the coming- and-going is more important than the actual points of departure and arrival. It is a spirit of wandering, and not whether the tyrol is reached, which counts. Sand's aesthetic of travel presents the paradox of being split between heaven and earth. : the desire to fly - like a bird - but finally the acceptance that one is no more than the "pedestrian" in lettres d'un voyageur or the translator in the prologue of francois le champi ; making the link between two cultural spheres : that of berry and that of paris.

L'univers d'histoire de ma vie est anime par deux mouvements opposes, eclatement et reconstruction. Les marques du premier se multiplient : morts du petit-frere et du pere, separation de la mere et de la ville natale, periodes d'enfermement et ruptures sentimentales. Mais les marques du second ne manquent pas : voyages reels et imaginaires, jalonnes de lettres et de romans. Le lecteur circule dans cet espace morcele. Notre these se compose de six chapitres. Les premier et cinquieme tentent de trouver les racines paternelles de l'imaginaire spatial de sand, de son reve d'ubiquite. Certes, la part de la grand-mere et de la mere est loin d'etre negligeable, mais le pere y joue le role le plus important. L'autobiographie de sand devoile, dans ce long recit sur maurice, la similitude de leurs experiences. Tous deux sont successivement separes tres jeunes de leur mere, d'ou leur tentative respective de reunion. Ils entretiennent avec nohant et paris le meme lien, nohant comme le foyer, la maison, et paris, l'ailleurs, l'amour, la liberte. Enfin, pere et fille se passionnent pour les departs. Les deuxieme, troisieme et quatrieme chapitres traitent du rapport entre paris et nohant, dans lequel continue a evoluer le voeu de sand d'etre a la fois ici et ailleurs. Ces deux lieux sont rivaux et complementaires, relies par l'ecriture plus encore que par le voyage. Ainsi que nous essayons de le montrer dans le dernier chapitre, le va-et-vient l'emporte chez sand sur les points de depart et d'arrivee. Il est errance et vagabondage, et ce n'est pas d'atteindre le tyrol qui compte. L'esthetique sandienne du passage presente donc le paradoxe d'etre partagee entre ciel et terre : desir d'envol - tel l'oiseau - mais finalement acceptation de n'etre que le "pieton" des lettres d'un voyageur ou le passeur-traducteur du prologue de francois le champi, faisant le lien entre deux spheres culturelles : du cote du berry, du cote de paris.
