In giono's chronicles, space concerns the topography of an invisible world. The process of spatialisation affects the material universe as well as the abstract, moral one. The novelist intends to elaborate a thousand-dimensional world, according to a transhistorical perspective. The essential dimension of the chronicles is space, not time. The narrative focalisation leads to the birth of a discontinuous and contradictory space. The chronicles are moral, more than oral tales and present moral strategies called "divertissement", a diversion meant for filling the empty universe. The geographical wanderings symbolize an initiatic trajectory with its three modalities : preparation, passage to death and new birth, which are present in the chronicles. That initiation leads to the access to a new world, in which the "divertissement" bears various passions, conveyed in terms of space and spatial dynamics. Diversion is the quest of an irreversible phenomenon combining a climax and the abolition of consciousness. It is also linked with monstruousnesse, a category which defines an ambiguous and heterogeneous universe. Space is the main character in the chronicles and allows the play with death. It is essentially dynamic and disproportionate, symbolizing the empty and inordinate universe.

L'espace gionien ressortit a une topographie de l'invisible. Le processus de spatialisation concerne aussi bien l'univers concret que l'univers abstrait et moral. Le romancier cherche a elaborer un monde a mille dimensions, dans une perspective temporelle transhistorique. La dimension essentielle des chroniques est l'espace, non le temps. La focalisation narrative opere l'avenement d'un espace discontinu et contradictoire. Recits moraux plus qu'oraux, les chroniques presentent une strategie, le divertissement, qui vise a combler le neant de l'univers. L'errance geographique symbolise une trajectoire initiatique dont les trois modalites, preparation, passage par la mort et nouvelle naissance, sont representees. Cette initiation debouche sur l'accession a un monde inedit, ou le divertissement sous-tend diverses passions, traduites en termes de dynamisme spatial. Le divertissement est quete d'une experience unissant paroxysme et abolition de la conscience. Il est lie au monstrueux, categorie constitutive d'un espace ambigu et heterogene. Lieu des conflits, l'espace est le personnage principal des chroniques et permet le jeu avec la mort. Son dynamisme procede de la demesure, du fractionnement infini, de la verticalite et de l'horizontalite abyssales. Le divertissement designe cette architecture de l'espace.
