The French approach is essentially "analytical". One steps back in order to analyze a phenomenon in its completed state. The English approach is essentially "synthetic". When the more direct approach is taken, the phenomenon is viewed in its time-context and is not subjected to the decomposition of its parts. An example of the distance between the two approaches: count-down and its French calque compte à rebours. The former does not seek to analyze the phenomenon but to describe it in immediate terms. The presence of the adverb down assures that count does not lose its verbal quality and, consequently, the term causes us to follow the movement of the phenomenon evoked. Compte à rebours, on the other hand, is reflective of a mentality that, taking its distance, analyzes the phenomenon, decomposes it and describes it in abstract terms. This example serves to illustrate our principal concern: the syntax of French compounding and the influence of English. It is not just a question of the transfer of English vocabulary to French via borrowing. More fundamental is the encounter of two different perspectives -- synthetic and analytical -- in a domain where their differences are most clearly seen, that of compounding. We believe it is possible to demonstrate that there presently exists in French a tendency towards a more synthetic mode of expression. The English contribution serves to bolster this tendency and readily furnishes appropriate linguistic material, but it is our contention that English is not at the origin of the new tendency. Rather, it is principally the evolution of technology which engenders, inevitably, a more synthetic world-view of the surrounding reality.

L'approche du français est essentiellement "analytique". L'on prend du recul pour analyser un phénomène vu dans son état achevé. L'approche de l'anglais est essentiellement "synthétique". En se rapprochant du phénomène, on le regarde dans le temps et on ne le décompose pas. Un exemple du décalage entre les deux approches : count-down et son calque français compte à rebours. Le premier ne cherche pas à analyser le phénomène mais à le décrire dans l'immédiat. La présence de l'adverbe down assure que count ne perd pas sa qualité verbale et, de ce fait, le terme nous fait suivre le mouvement du phénomène évoqué. Compte à rebours, par contre, est né d'une autre démarche, où l'on prend du recul pour analyser le phénomène, le décomposer et le décrire dans des termes abstraits. L'exemple que nous venons de donner est révélateur de notre préoccupation principale : la syntaxe de la composition en français et l'influence de l'anglais. Il ne s'agit pas de la simple transmission d'un vocabulaire anglais au français au moyen des emprunts. Encore plus fondamentale est la collusion de deux perspectives différentes -- synthétique et analytique -- dans un domaine où elles se dévoilent avec le plus de clarté, le domaine de la composition. Nous croyons pouvoir déceler une tendance qui favorise actuellement une expressivité plus synthétique en français. La contribution anglaise sert à renforcer cette tendance et à fournir un matériel linguistique qui est facilement mis au service de la tendance synthétique, mais, selon nous, ce n'est pas l'anglais qui en est à l'origine. C'est principalement l'évolution de la technologie qui entraine, inéluctablement, une vision plus synthétique du monde et de la réalité ambiante.
