L'Ange ou l'instinct de mort : études sur le mythe de l'Ange dans la littérature française du vingtième siècle

After a brief historical survey concerning the representation of the angel from the middle-ages to the nineteenth century this workaims through fourteen literary studies at defining what characterizes the image of the angel in the twentieth century. Each of these studies introduces us into an imaginary world paculiar to its author, but each is subtly connected to the thirteen other studies as far as the image of the angel is concerned. Gradually is woven a mesh of fine-drawn meanings, which the conclusion tries to pin-point and to organize into a system. First, from a psychological point of view, the angel appears in a world haunted by the downfall and the nostalgia of the paradise lost. From an aesthetical point of view, the "angelic" writers are all involved in an unending quest of a symbolic key which would reveal the secret of the universe to them. From a sociological point of view, the angel would be the representation that the twentieth century man would have of himself : a deified man, from now on omnipotent in a universe without god.

Après un rapide aperçu historique sur la représentation de l'ange du moyen-âge au XI Xème siècle, ce travail s'est proposé de définir au travers de quatorze études littéraires ce qui caractérise la figure de l'ange au XXème siècle. Chacune des études nous fait pénétrer dans un univers imaginaire particulier à son auteur, mais chacune aussi entretient, quant à sa représentation de l'ange, de subtils rapports avec les treize autres. Lentement se dessine tout un réseau de significations que la conclusion tente de fixer et de systématiser, elles sont d'ordres divers. Psychologique d'abord : l'ange apparait dans un monde hante par la faute et la nostalgie d'un paradis perdu. Esthétique ensuite : les écrivains "angéliques" sont tous à la recherche inlassablement d'une clé symbolique qui leur ouvrirait les secrets de l'univers. Sociologique enfin : l'ange serait la représentation que l'homme du vingtième siècle se donne de lui-même : homme divinise et désormais tout-puissant dans un ciel sans dieu.
