In this thesis, metaphysical aspects of samuel beckett's work were systematically deduced from the observation of its rhetorical practice. Every section of antique rhetorical technique (invention, arrangement, ornementation with figures, representation, memory) is one part of this research work. The original work by samuel beckett upon it is examined here precisely, and are examined too the conditions in which comes up, first in the text itself then ouside of it, the critical speech which must say something about it. Every part begins with a ragher short introduction situating in literature history the problems the investigation of which traditionaly takes place before the text and out of it; it ends with several pages saying the origine and the coherence of the situation the work choose for itself. The figure of speech called "epanothosis" is central in this thesis, for the samuel beckett's text proves to be organized by it in every part of the internal reflexions upon its work: putting a proposition forward then backward, then taking it up again, slightly changed, then going further.

Dans ce travail, la metaphysique de l'oeuvre de samuel beckett a ete deduite systematiquement de l'observation du fonctionnement de sa pratique rhetorique. Chaque division de la technique rhetorique antique (invention, mise en ordre, ornementation, representation, memoire) fait l'objet d'une partie de cette etude. Le fonctionnement original que lui fait subir le travail de samuel beckett y est examine avec precision, ainsi que les conditions d' elaboration du discours critique, interne puis externe a l' oeuvre, auquel il donne lieu. Chaque section est ainsi precedee d'une introduction assez courte qui replace dans l'histoire de la litterature les problemes dont l'examen se faisait traditionnellement avant et hors de l'oeuvre; et elle est suivie de quelques pages qui retracent l'origine et definissent la coherence de la position que l'oeuvre a choisi de donner d'elle-meme. La figure rhetorique appelee epanorthose occupe dans ce travail une place centrale, puisqu'il s'evere qu'elle organise chacune des reflexions internes a l'oeuvre sur le travail qu'elle accomplit : n'avancant une proposition, une position que pour la nier, et la reprendre pourtant, legerement modifiee, pour une progression incertaine mais constante.
