The bisu language - placed with the mpi, phou noy, pyen and coong in the bisoid family - belongs to the loloish division of the tibeto-burman languages. There are about 500bisu in northern thailan. In four villages within 80 kilometres south of chiang rai. Already quite integrated in thai society, the bisu, considered as lua (lawa) by the thai, have lost most of their traditions and adopted the yuan (northern thai) life-style. Their identity survives only in their language whose short term extinction is predictable, since it is heavly mixed with thai. "the bisu : a monograph" presents a description of the bisu people and language in two volumes. Volume 1 comprises four different parts : an ethnographic presentation of the bisu - a phonological study of the language - a grammar of bisu - six texts recording bisu traditions. Volume 2 is a dictionary of 1600words.

Les bisu, regoupes avec les mpi, les phou noy, les pyen et les coong dans la famille bisoide, appartiennent a la division lolo de la famille des langues tibeto-birmanes. Ils representent, au nord de la thailande, une population d'environ 500 individus repartis en 4 villages, dans un rayon de 80 km au sud de chiang rai. Fortement integres, les bisu, que les thai considerent comme des lua (lawa), ont abandonne la quasi-totalite de leurs traditions, adoptant le mode de vie des yuan, les thai du nord. Le seul indice de leur identite a avoir, jusque-la, survecu est leur langue, deja bien metissee d'enprunts au thai et dont l'extinction est privisible a court terme. "une monographie du bisu" presente, en 2 tomes,la description du peuple bisu et de sa langue. Le tome 1 comprend 4 parties distinctes : une presentation ethnographique du peuple bisu - une etude phonologique de la langue - l'analyse de la grammaire - 6 textes retranscrivant les traditions bisu. Le tome 2 est un dictionnaire de 1600 mots.
