The whole of rene guy cadou's work bespeaks a constant worry which stems from a double concern : the poet being anxious to account not only for man's transience upon earth but for his eternity as well. Urged by a solid appetite for life and just as strong an eagerness to reach further beyond the narrow frame of his existence, he ceaselessly moves forward and back along the time sequence in order to embrace the whole of it as much as to free himself from it. From childhood, friendship and what is enduring about them he starts on that slow deconstruction of time. Cadou draws the gist of his creative art from the play of light, plant life and his own daily experience too. But woman who is part and parcel of the poet's mental make-up is essential to the completion of his journey through time. Merged as she is with the whole cosmos she alone can make the boundaries of time vanish into thin air. Thus by imparting to his work an undeniable oneiric dimension, cadou follows in the footsteps of the german romantics whose powerful influence he acknowledges and, pursuing a quest they had already started on, he paves the way for new openings beyond romanticism and surrealism.
