Abstract EN:

The plantu cartoons, appearing daily on the front page of le monde, condence implicits shared by members of the same culture but which may raise problems for foeign readers. The aim of this thesis is to analyse the difficulties peculiar to this type of graphic expression. Pedagogical utilization with foreign learners should the be made more profitable. The image and its codes number among the difficulties analysed through gestems (human sign langage that can be itemized as "frozen" by the cartoonist), double faced symbols and signals (significans and signification). Implicits are various : they may be linguistic (play on words), iconic (pictural evocation of known elements), pragmatic (implications that presuppose extra-textual knowledge), and cultural. These cultural implicits refer directly to what bourdieu calls "educated cultural" (art, litterature) as well as to everyday background and shared values. Humour and figures of speech (metaphors, syllepses, repetitions, various oppositions) add to the complexity of the cartoon. The thesis in its pedagogic section attempts to clarify this complexity.

Le dessin humoristique de plantu qui parait quotidiennement a la une du monde est un condense d'implicites que partagent les membres d'une meme culture mais qui posent probleme a des lecteurs etrangers. L'objectif de la these est d'analyser les difficultes inherentes a ce type d'expression, de facon a permettre ensuite une exploitation pedagogique avec des apprenants etrangers. L'image et ses codes est l'une des difficultes analysees a travers les gestemes (gestes humains repertoriables et figes par le dessin), les symboles et les signaux qui sont tous les unites a double face (signifiant et signifie). Les implicites sont de differentes natures : linguistiques (jeux de mots), iconiques (evocation en images d'elements), pragmatiques (sousentendus qui supposent des connaissances extra-textuelles) et culturels. Ces derniers relevent de la culture cultivee (art, litterature), de la culture quotidienne et de valeurs partagees. L'humour et les figures de rhetorique (metaphores, syllepses, repetitions, oppositions diverses) completent la complexite du dessin que la partie pedagogique de la these tente de rendre comprehensible.
