The title is intended to signify that the object of this inquiry is painting, more accurately the paintings of giotto and specifically the cycle of the life of saint francis, along the walls of the nave of the upper basilica at assisi ; that the method is semiotic, but resorts chiefly to such aspects of that discipline as address the linkingsand concatenations by which narrative commes to be ; lastly, that due attention will always be paid to the fact that we are dealing with a phenomenon of transmission of meaning, which brings complex and variable levels of enunciation into play. The thesis is three pronged : it posits in the first place that the picture is also legible as a text ; secondly, it claims that some pictorial arrangements make it possible, without imprecision or metaphor, to read them as a pictorial narrative ; lastly, it suggests that the full scope of the process of iconic creation may be encompassed if one develops a model of analysis that enables to account for the configurations, prefigurations and refigurations (ricoeur).

Le titre entend signifier que la recherche est de peinture, plus precisement giottesque en l'occurence, c'est le cycle consacre par le peintre a la vie de saint francois, le long des parois de la nef de la basilique superieure d'assise ; que la methode employee est semiotique, main mobilise essentiellement la partie de cette discipline qui s'occupe des enchainements et des concatenations par lesquels le recit advient ; enfin, que l'on aura garde constamment a l'esprit qu'il s'agit d'un phenomene de transmission de sens, mettant en jeu des instances d'enonciation complexe et variables. La these est triple : elle pose en premier lieu que l'image est aussi lisible comme texte, deuxiemement, que certains agencements d'images permettent de parler, sans approximation ni metaphore, de recit pictural. Elle suggere enfin, que le processus de creation iconique se comprendra dans toute son ampleur si l'on dispose d'un modele d'analyse capable de rendre compte des configurations, des prefigurations et des refigurations (ricoeur).
