The most revolutionary aspect of the generative grammar is caracterized by the introduction of the notion of falsification which amounts to construct an evaluation procedure for selecting one among the various grammars permitted bu the proposed linguistic theory and compatible with the given data. But if this choice provides the principal source of the progress of generative grammar, the ambiguity of the empirical and formal interpretations assigned to the proliferation of grammars subjects the very notion of rule to a searching critique.

L'apport le plus fondamental de la grammaire generative a la linguistique est d'y avoir introduit la notion de falsification. Celle-ci se traduit par la procedure d'evaluation des theories grammaticales rivales dont le choix constitue le moteur meme du progres de la discipline. Mais les criteres de ce choix n'etant ni empiriques ni formels, c'est la notion de regle qui se trouve remise en cause.
