{Résumé en anglais]In our study dedicated to the problems of metalanguage in Madame Bovary, L'Éducation sentimentale, Bouvard et Pécuchet and Le Dictionnaire des Idées Reçues, we tried to make clear the importance of the "autonymic modalisation". Metalinguistic modality which consists in making intervene on the way of the designation of the referent the representation of the speech (ex. "la lune de miel, comme on disait (the honeymoon, as one said)", the autonymic modalisation is a concept which enables us to approach to the central questions for our author, especially these of the interdiscourse and of the consciousness of the gap between the order of the language and the order of the thing. We confirmed how the use of this modality of the discourse by the narrator is explained by his strategy of the utterance for detaching oneself from the language of the others, vector of the "bêtise", without going against the principle of the impersonality.
