Founded up on Félicien Champsaur's (1858-1934) many-sided work, this thesis aims at understanding how, at the interface of the written arts and the visual arts, the novel tends to become, at the turn between the XIXth and the XXth centuries, a complex plastic representation device. The latter gathers varied references that it enjoys mixing, often having them embodied in emblematic characters whose malleable image gets distorted at leisure, multiplies or splits up to better absorb the most eclectic influences, from antiquity to modernity, from the East to the West. Confronted with the alienation of the individual and the heterogeneity of the arts, it reinvents itself and appropriates the aesthetics that open the way to new forms of novelistic expression. These appear then as the effect of the exchanges the novel fosters with varied forms of art (theater, pantomime, choreography, circus art, poster, painting, etc. ) and as the apparent signs of its plasticity.

En étudiant l’œuvre multiforme de Félicien Champsaur (1858-1934), cette thèse a pour ambition de comprendre comment, à l'interface des arts de l'écrit et des arts visuels, le roman champsaurien tend à devenir, à la croisée des XIXe et XXe siècles, un dispositif plastique complexe. Ce dernier convoque des références diverses qu'il se plaît à mêler, les incarnant souvent dans des personnages emblématiques dont l'image malléable se déforme à loisir, se démultiplie ou se fragmente, pour mieux absorber, de l'antiquité à la modernité, de l'Orient à l'Occident, les influences les plus éclectiques. Confronté à l'aliénation de l'individu et à l'hétérogénéité des arts, il se réinvente et s'approprie une esthétique qui ouvre la voie à de nouvelles formes d'expression romanesque. Celles-ci apparaissent alors comme l'aboutissement des échanges que le roman nourrit avec des formes artistiques diverses (théâtre, pantomime, chorégraphie, arts du cirque, affiche, peinture, etc. ) et comme les signes apparents de sa plasticité.
