The development of the theatre in brazil in the years 1953 to 1975, influenced by the social conditions and political life of the period and by the work of amateur companies, gave birth to the teatro de arena in sao paulo. This started out merely as an experiment with theatre-in-the-round and then became politicized, claiming the title of "teatro popular". This concept is examined in the light of the french tradition of "theatre populaire" and of other brazilian experiments and theoretical writings on the subject. The teatro de arena experiment ended in 1975 despite the struggle by luiz carlos arutim to keep it alive from 1970 onwards.

Dans le contexte politique et social bresilien des annees 1953 a 1975 et sous l'influence de compagnies d'amateurs, le theatre evolue au bresil et donne naissance, a sao paulo, au theatre arena. Partant d'une simple experience de "theatre en rond", le theatre arena se politise et revendique pour lui le titre de "theatre populaire". Ce concept est discute compte tenu de la tradition francaise de theatre populaire, d'autres experiences bresiliennes et d'ecrits theoriques sur le sujet. L'experience du theatre arena s'acheve en 1975 malgre les efforts de luiz carlos arutim pour le maintenir en vie apres 1970.
