This thesis aims at discovering the different narrative and structural functions and the semantic investment of metamorphosis in one hundred one European and African fairy tales. Through a semiotic analysis, our approach lies on the hypothesis according which the tale is resonating with different levels. In the same way as numerous tale motifs, the metamorphosis forms a metapsychological configuration linked to anthropological preoccupations. Moreover, it illustrates reminiscences of ethnological practices linked to passage rites, initiation rites, and funeral cults. It also recalls totemic beliefs. Besides these ethnological considerations, it lies on rhetorical and linguistic processes which contribute to enhance positively or negatively the metamorphosed subject according to other subjects. It permits to incarnate fear as well as fascination men or women or any changing person may suggest to others. This study is composed of three parts. In the first chapter, we define our approach of the fairy tales and our methodology. The second chapter consists in a presentation of the nine groups of tales in which the metamorphosis appears. We expound the thematic and narrative composition, the representational content, the mythological inspiration of the tales which are concerned so as to make appear the semantic and structural role metamorphosis acts at last, in the third chapter, we present the different types of metamorphosis, its different semantic and narrative functions as well as the reinvestment of ethnological material and the rhetorical processes linked to anthropological preoccupations.

Cette thèse vise à dégager les différentes fonctions narratives et structurelles ainsi que l'investissement sémantique de la métamorphose au sein de cent et un contes européens et africains. Par le biais d'une analyse sémiotique, notre approche repose sur l'hypothèse selon laquelle le conte est en résonance avec différents niveaux. Au même titre que de nombreux motifs du conte, la métamorphose constitue une configuration métapsychologique reliée à des préoccupations d'ordre anthropologique. Par ailleurs, elle illustre des réminiscences de manifestations ethnologiques ayant trait principalement aux rites de passage, rites initiatiques, réclusions féminines ou cultes funéraires. Elle évoque également parfois des croyances totémiques. Outre ces considérations d'ordre ethnologique, elle repose sur des procédés linguistiques et rhétoriques qui contribuent à valoriser positivement ou négativement l'actant métamorphose aux yeux des autres figures de conte. Elle permet d'incarner aussi bien la crainte ou la fascination que l'homme ou la femme peut inspirer à l'autre sexe ou encore tout être en changement auprès d'un actant témoin. Cette étude se divise en trois parties. Dans le premier chapitre, nous définissons notre approche du conte et notre méthodologie. La deuxième partie consiste en une présentation des neuf groupes de contes ou thèmes dans lesquels la métamorphose apparaît. Nous exposons la composition thématico-narrative, l'inspiration mythologique et le contenu figuratif de ces contes afin de faire ressortir le rôle sémantique et structurel de la métamorphose. Enfin, dans le troisième chapitre, nous présentons les différents types de métamorphoses, ses différentes fonctions sémantiques et narratives ainsi que le réinvestissement du matériau ethnologique et les procédés rhétoriques mis en relation avec des considérations d'ordre anthropologique.
