From the opaque and recent geography of the gypsy world, it is our intention to establish a solid base upon which we can begin to appreciate, in more substantial detail, the linguistic situation of the perpinya gypsies at the close of the 20th century. Our initial point of departure will be an examination of the social organisation of the community. This will enable us to place their language within a particular cultural context: a small but unique society. Catalan is, today, the internal language of the majority of perpinya gypsies. The migratory history of gypsies has given rise to an indian language without equivalence in the world, and in this lies the origins of the kalo of catalonia. This history invents now a catalan unlike any other dialect.

Dans le geographie opaque, et souvent recente, du monde tsigane, notre enquete se propose d'etablir une base solide d'appreciation de la situa, tion linguistique des gitans de perpignan en cette fin de siecle. Pour ce faire, il nous a paru utile, dans un premier temps, d'eclairer certains aspects touchant a l'organisation sociale de la communaute, no, tre idee etant simplement de situer cette langue a l'interieur d'un con, texte culturel particulier qui est celui d'une petite societe a part en, tiere. Le catalan est actuellement la langue interne de la plupart des gitans de perpignan, l'histoire mobile du monde tsigane creait jadis une langue indienne, deja distincte, qui n'avait pas d'equivalent au monde et qui etait a l'origine du kalo de catalogne. Elle invente aujourd'hui un ca, talan nouveau qui est etranger a la nomenclature des dialectes connus a ce jour.
