La fonction phatique dans la production romanesque de Jean Giono

As it reinforces the circuit of communication by means of specific linguistic signs, the phatic function of language denotes a tendency to wish to communicate. When it is transferred to literature, it necessitates also taking into account, on the one hand, the social and cultural life of the signs and, on the other hand, the dynamic forces of the text. An analysis of giono's novelistic output does indeed reveal the importance of these two factors in establishing and maintaining a close relationship between the author and the reader: by means of the symbolism of texts, different narrative techniques and paradoxically - the use of what is unstated, giono makes his presence know in the stories he writes and engages us implicitely. What is more, the writer achieves the prodigious recreation of a new phatic communion based, in these modern times, on the loss of natural communication between people.

En renforcant le circuit de la communication au moyen de marques linguistiques specifiques, la fonction phatique du langage designe une tendance a vouloir communiquer. Lorsqu'elle est transposee a la litterature, elle oblige a prendre aussi en compte, d'une part, la vie sociale et culturelle des signes, et, d'autre part, la dynamique textuelle. La production romanesque de giono revele en effet l'importance de ces deux facteurs d'analyser dans l'institution et le fonctionnement d'une relation intime auteur - lecteur: par le symbolisme des textes, les diffe- rentes techniques narratives et - paradoxalement - la mise en oeuvre d'un non-dit, giono marque sa presence dans les recits qu'il compose et nous interpelle implicitement. Plus encore, l'ecrivain realise ce prodige de recreer une nouvelle communion phatique fondee, en nos temps modernes, sur la perte d'une communication naturelle entre les hommes.
