Bohemia, the phenomenon of the poet's marginality, appears, in the XIXth century, as a means, specific to the artist, of demonstrating the problem of his situation in society. The analysis of this situation, taken from the writings by bohemia and the writings on bohemia, attempts, through an existential history extending from 1830 to 1914, to unravel its structural and historical causes. The conduct of the artist, a compensating strategy to deal with a situation of conflict, together with the imaginary values which underpin it are studied with reference to key dates : - 1830: the heyday of bohemia. - 1850: bohemia unmasked. - 1870: bohemia defeated. - 1900: bohemia disowned. The development of the values making up the bohemian "code" allows one to high-light the vitality, gradual shift, erosion and exhaustion of the myth of bohemia.

La bohème, phénomène de marginalité du poète, apparait, au XIXe siècle, comme une façon spécifique à l'artiste de poser le problème de sa situation dans la société. L'analyse de cette situation, menée à partir du discours de la bohème et du discours sur la bohème, s'efforce d'en dégager les causes tant structurelles que conjoncturelles, au travers d’une histoire existentielle allant de 1830 à 1914. La conduite de l'artiste, "parade" compensatrice à une situation conflictuelle, et les valeurs imaginaires qui la fondent, sont étudiées autour de dates-clés: - 1830 : la fête bohème. - 1850 : la bohème démasquée. - 1870 : la défaite bohème. - 1900 : la bohème reniée. L'évolution des valeurs composant la "liturgie" bohème permet de mettre en évidence la vitalité, la dérive, la dégradation et l'épuisement du mythe de la bohème.
