This research aims, in the first instance, at examining the social and religious aspects of traditional housing in najed (the central region in saudi arabia), up to the introduction of new building materials in the undergoing constant modifications in the architectural and urban fields. Due to the social, economical factor and especialy the exploitation of oil income, a new types of housing have been adopted. Howver, there is struggle between tradition and modernism in housing architecture. The present analysis is concerned with conflict and the solutions adopted by the local people. The solutions are either to constantly modfiy the architecture of the living space to suit the people. Abstract FR:

L'etude examine dans un premier temps les fondements sociaux et religieux de l'habitat traditionnel dans la region du najed (arabie saoudite), jusqu'a l'arrivee de nouveaux materiaux de construction dans les annees 1950, date a partir de laquelle la ville de riyadh (capitale de la region) n'a cesse de subir des transformations permanentes sur le plan architectural et urbain. L'introduction de nouveaux types d'abitat, grace au facteur socio-economique, en particulier celle de l'exploitation de revenus petroliers, a engendre de multiples problemes. Ces derniers sont dus a conflit pose entre tradition et modernite. L'analyse menee ici porte sur ce conflit etles solutions qu'adoptent les populations. Celles-ci sont de deux nature : elles consistent soit a transformer les espaces pour les adapter aux besoins et peu importe dans ce cas si l'habitat s'en trouve denature, ou soit a changer les habitudes et les pratiques pour faire correspondre a l'environnement domestique.
