This thesis analyses the behavior of the young man in four nineteenth century novels : stendhal's "lucien leuwen", balzac's "le pere goriot", erckmann-chatrian's "histoire d'un homme du peuple" and flaubert's "l'education sentimentale". It was therefore necessary to examine the young man in his socio-political environment. Then. The behavior of the young man can be studied : evolution of the young man in three steps. The latter undergoes a sentimental, political, artistic and social education. Several symbols can be found in the young man's behavior : a being going through deep changes, in conflict with himself, and in search of himself. Naturally, one cannot neglect the relationships of our writers with their heros and the resemblances between our young man of the nineteenth century novels and adolescents in the twentieth century literature.

Cette these analyse la figure du jeune homme dans quatre romans du dix-neuvieme siecle : "lucien leuwen" de stendhal, "le pere goriot" de balzac, "histoire d'un homme du peuple" d'erckmann-chatrian et "l'education sentimentale" de flaubert. Il fallait donc examiner le jeune homme dans le contexte politico-social. Ensuite, la figure du jeune homme peut etre etudiee : evolution du jeune homme en trois etapes. Le jeune homme subit une education sentimentale, politique, artistique et sociale. Divers symboles peuvent etre enfin, rattaches a la figure du jeune homme : etre en mutation, en conflit avec luimeme et a la recherche de lui-meme. Nous ne pouvons negliger naturellement les rapports de nos ecrivains avec leur heros et les similitudes entre nos jeunes gens des romans du dix-neuvieme siecle et les adolescents dans la litterature du vingtieme siecle.
