Communication au quotidien dans un contexte arabo-musulman : entre modernité et tradition. Le cas du Bahreïn

This study falls within the framework of intercultural studies. It focuses primarily on cultural variations that affect communicative behaviours and cause misunderstandings in exchanges between Bahrainis and the French. Based on a series of inquiries carried out with French people residing in Bahrain and with Bahrainis who have studied in France, it adopts a qualitative approach with regard to the analysis of data collected. The study throws light on the insertion modalities of both populations, on sociability network and wonders about opening to linguistic and cultural alterity. Among the most important differences noted in the content analysis, there are cultural variations of interactional ethos, conception of politeness, communicative styles, relation to time, to sound environment, to space and, of course, social relations between men and women. These variations largely imputed to religious oriented communicative behaviours in an Arabo-Islamic country are often perceived as strange and irritating and interactional rules, sometimes based on conservative religious interpretations can escape the understanding of Western foreigners. Interpretation of differences is therefore made on the basis of stereotypes combined with prejudices and ethnocentric stands. The dissertation seeks to understand the basis of communicative functioning in Arabo-Islamic cultures and especially in the Bahraini society, so as to better apprehend the reciprocal perceptions and the eventual loopholes in the intercomprehension between Bahrainis and the French. Considering the particular Bahraini context, a country caught in the tension between modernity and tradition, the dissertation pinpoints the specific stands with respect to religion as well as the seemingly contradictory and disconcerting postures for the Western foreigner. As for the Bahrainis, the inquiry depicts that their experience of a long stay – sometimes as long as five years – in a Western country, away from social and parental constraints, modifies their rapport with their home country, with its norms and values. Cette étude s’inscrit dans le domaine des études interculturelles. Elle porte principalement sur les variations culturelles qui affectent les comportements communicatifs et provoquent des malentendus dans les échanges entre Bahreïniens et Français. Fondée sur une série d’enquêtes menées auprès de Français résidant au Bahreïn pour raisons professionnelles et auprès de Bahreïniens ayant effectué des séjours d’études en France, elle adopte une démarche qualitative pour ce qui est de l’analyse des données recueillies. L’étude met en lumière les modalités d’insertion des deux populations, les réseaux de sociabilité et s’interroge sur l’ouverture à l’altérité linguistique et culturelle. Parmi les différences les plus importantes relevées à travers l’analyse de contenu, figurent, les variations culturelles de l’ethos interactionnel, la conception de la politesse, les styles communicatifs, le rapport au temps, à l’environnement sonore, à l’espace et, bien sûr, les rapports sociaux entre hommes et femmes. Ces variations, en grande partie imputables à l’ancrage religieux des comportements communicatifs en pays arabo-musulman, sont souvent perçues comme étranges et irritants et les règles interactionnelles, fondées sur des interprétations parfois conservatrices de la religion, peuvent échapper à l’entendement des étrangers occidentaux. L’interprétation des différences se fait alors sur la base de stéréotypes auxquels se mêlent des préjugés et des positions ethnocentriques. La thèse interroge la base du fonctionnement communicatif dans les cultures arabo-musulmanes et plus particulièrement dans la société bahreïnienne, afin de mieux appréhender les perceptions réciproques et les éventuels écueils dans l’intercompréhension entre Bahreïniens et Français. Compte tenu du contexte particulier du Bahreïn, pays pris dans une tension entre modernité et tradition, la thèse pointe des positionnements spécifiques face à la religion ainsi que des postures en apparence contradictoires et déroutants pour l’étranger occidental. Quant aux Bahreïniens, l’enquête montre que leur expérience d’un long séjour – parfois jusqu’à cinq ans - dans un pays occidental, loin des contraintes parentales et sociales, modifie leur rapport à leur pays d’origine, à ses normes et ses valeurs.
