This study deals with the vision of the middle ages which michelet puts forward throughout his works, whether historical or literary. It sets out to analyse this vision by demonstrating its mythical consistency. The first section deals with the middles ages considered as a source. For michelet, the middles ages represent first and foremost the youth, both of france and of the world. The second section is an attempt to show that michelet's vision takes shape as a reaction against a catholic and traditionalist view. In so doing, he reverses the significance of this basic view, without however modifying its fundamentals. The final section aims to show that michelet's middle ages extend beyond the historical. A moment at which time stands still, they escape from linear time, becoming part of a cycle of death and rebirth. Thus michelet, historian though he is, plays his part in shaping a mythical view of the middle ages.

Cette these etudie la vision du moyen age quemichelet propose a travers toute son oeuvre, historique ou plus litteraire. Elle vise a analyser cette vision en montrant sa coherence mythique, qui s'insere dans la representation litteraire du moyen age heritee du romantisme. Une premiere partie traite du moyen age comme origine. Le moyen age represente d'abord pour michelet une jeunesse de la france et du monde. La personnalite de l'homme moderne s'y forge et le concept de progres y nait. Le droit europeen y trouve sa forme. Une seconde partie montre que la vision de michelet se forme souvent par reaction contre une image chretienne, traditionaliste et monarchiste du moyen age. Dans ce cas, il inverse la signification de l'image de base, sans en modifier les fondements. Une derniere partie montre que le mouen age de michelet echappe largement a l'histoire. Moment d'immobilisation du temps, il echappe a la duree, pour entrer dans un cycle de mort et renaissance. Michelet, historien, contribue donc a constituer le moyen age comme mythe.
