Cette recherche sur l'eveil de la marine dans l'angleterre du haut-moyen-age (du 7eme siecle au 11eme siecle) s'appuie sur trois disciplines complementaires, l'archeologie, l'histoire et la litterature. Depuis une vingtaine d'annees, de nouvelles hypotheses et decouvertes permettent de mieux comprendre et connaitre l'origine et l'evolution de l'activite maritime. La these presente une analyse des conditions dans lesquelles la marine, d'une part, et les unites navales qui la composent, d'autre part, se sont progressivement developpees. L'objectif de la recherche est de mettre en valeur les premiers pas de cet instrument prestigieux qui a fait la grandeur et l'orgueil de l'angleterre, et de demontrer, par les faits, que la marine anglaise, ancetre de la royal navy, est nee bien avant le 12eme siecle.

This study of the emergence of the navy in england in the high middle ages (from the 7th to the 11th century) is based on three complementary disciplines : archaeology, history and literature. For some twenty years now, new theories and discoveries have contributed to a better understanding and knowledge of the origins and development of maritime activities. This thesis analyses the conditions under which the navy, on the one hand, and the naval units of which it is composed, on the other, have gradually developed. This research aims to bring out the very steps of this instrument of prestige that was the pride and splendour of the english nation and shows with the help of facts that the english navy, the ancestor of today's royal navy, was born well before the 12th century.
