This thesis proposes a stylistic approach, both descriptive and problematic, of three contemporary american short fiction writers. In the first part, the "whiteness" of the style is studied in terms of space, time and narrative technique, and it focuses on the notions of emptiness, blank and disparity. The second part is dedicated to the omnipresence of silence, both as a dramatic force and as an aesthetic motif, in a fiction clearly defined as "open". The third part confronts the stories to the notion of realism and enhances the residual quality of this type of writing in the analysis of some very short short stories, through the symbolic importance of numerous realistic details.

La these propose une approche stylistique a la fois descriptive et problematique de trois auteurs americains contemporains de fiction breve. La premiere partie envisage la "blancheur" de l'ecriture dans une perspective spatiale, temporelle et narrative, en etudiant les notions de vide et de disparite. La deuxieme partie se concentre sur l'omnipresence du silence, a la fois comme ressort dramatique et comme motif esthetique, dans une ecriture qui fait l'apologie de l'ouverture. La troisieme partie permet de confronter le corpus a la notion de realisme, en faisant apparaitre, sur la base de l'analyse de quelques nouvelles tres breves et a travers l'utilisation du detail, l'idee d'une ecriture residuelle.
