The Rhodesian Crisis was characterised for more than seventy years by ambiguous relations between the mother country and one of her colonies. Put into historical perspective it shows that the issue was marked by the nature and evolution of the British imperial idea. Rhodesia was a 'non-typical' colony. Since London considered Rhodesia as a Dominion, the Rhodesian Government was able to institute a political system based on racial segregation. At the same time, the interests of natives in the administration of the Colonies had become the core of the imperial idea. The institutionalisation of the Commonwealth of Nations was affected by Rhodesia's inability to carry out a post-colonial transition, as it was torn between white nationalism and imperial decolonisation.

La crise de Rhodésie recouvre l'étendue de ce que l'histoire retiendra comme une 'question', caractérisée pendant plus de soixante-dix ans par des relations ambigue͏̈s entre la mère patrie et l'une de ses colonies. Or, analyser dans toute leur perspective diachronique les contours et les articulations de cette question conduit à formuler des hypothèses touchant à la nature et à l'évolution de l'idée impériale britannique. La Rhodésie était une colonie 'atypique'. Considérée comme un Dominion par Londres, elle mit en place un système de discrimination raciale quand, dans le même temps, l'idée impériale évoluait dans le sens d'une prise en compte des intérêts des indigènes dans la gestion des colonies. Le Commonwealth des Nations fut ainsi marqué, dans la phase cruciale de son institutionnalisation, par l'impossible évolution post-coloniale de la Rhodésie, prise entre nationalisme blanc et décolonisation impériale.
