This study analyses how the Irish went from an " invisible " minority to a " visible " minority in English society after the Second World War in the discourses and policies concerning ethnic minorities. “Coloured” people were viewed as immigrants in English society after the Second World War. However, the inclusion of the Irish as part of the white population did not entirely prevent them from encountering the same kinds of problems as the “visible” minorities. During the 1980s, Irish voluntary sector organisations rapidly developed around one main demand: recognition of the existence of an Irish ethnic identity. The Irish were recognised as an ethnic minority in several local authorities in London at this time. Nevertheless, it was not until the 2001 census that the Irish were included under the “ethnic group” question and recognised on the national level but this statistic “visibility” came ten years too late.

Ce travail examine le chemin parcouru par les Irlandais pour passer d'une minorité " invisible " à une minorité " visible " dans la société anglaise après la deuxième guerre mondiale. Les personnes de " couleur " vont être considérés les immigrés dans la société anglaise de l'après-guerre. Cependant, l'incorporation des Irlandais au sein de la population blanche ne va pas les protéger entièrement et ils vont rencontrer le même type de problèmes que les minorités ethniques " visibles ". Le secteur associatif irlandais va s'organiser pendant les années 1980 autour d'une revendication principale : celle de l'existence d'une identité ethnique irlandaise. Les Irlandais vont être reconnus comme une minorité ethnique dans plusieurs autorités locales londoniennes à cette époque. Néanmoins, il a fallu attendre le recensement de 2001 pour l'inclusion d'une catégorie ethnique irlandaise au niveau national mais cette " visibilité " statistique est venue dix ans trop tard.
