"Creating a society to match its scenery" : le projet littéraire de Wallace Stegner ou la réécriture de l'Ouest américain

Wallace Stegner (1909-1993), a major figure in contemporary literature of the American west, approaches the history, the myths and the environment of his native region by combining autobiography, fiction and essay in an attempt to promote intellectual culture in a region noted for its naive optimism, yet sensitive to the fragility of its spectacular scenery. This thesis questions the foundations of Stegner's "unavowed" project and the manner in which the author conjugates the quest for personal identity with civic didacticism. By isolating four major complementary aspects of the author's work, we attempt to expose the networks of meaning that enable the author to formulate a corrected vision of the west, where the civilizing role of the university as institution, nourished by a collective conscience, exercises a stabilizing function in the larger community.

Wallace Stegner (1909-1993), auteur incontournable de la littérature de l'ouest américain, aborde l'histoire, les mythes et l'environnement de sa région natale par le biais d'une approche hybride où se mêlent autobiographie, fiction et essai, afin de promouvoir la culture intellectuelle dans un ouest voué à l'optimisme béat mais sensible à la fragilité de ses paysages grandioses. Cette thèse interroge les fondements du "projet" de Stegner et la manière dont l'auteur met la quête d'une identité personnelle au service d'un didactisme civique. En isolant quatre grands axes complémentaires au sein de l'œuvre (l'autobiographie, l'appartenance au lieu, les mythes de la frontière, les espaces naturels) nous tentons d'exposer les réseaux de signification permettant à l'auteur de formuler une vision corrigée de l'ouest, ou la vocation civilisatrice de l'institution universitaire, entretenue par une conscience collective, joue un rôle stabilisateur au sein de la communauté.
